Monopoly Event

(Fullerton, CA, June 5, 2010) – Over 56 players gathered together to
have some serious fun competing in the YWCA of North Orange County’s
fifth annual MONOPOLY® Tournament. Sponsored by Chevron and endorsed by
Hasbro Inc., the event raised $4,200. Proceeds from the tournament will
benefit the YWCA North Orange County in their effort to provide breast
cancer detection services to uninsured, low-income women, economic
empowerment programs to at-risk youth for employment and career
assistance, formal dresses to low income high school girls to attend
their proms, as well as to wives of soldiers to attend the annual Marine
Corps Birthday Ball.
The day-long competition
included two 90-minute preliminary rounds of the MONOPOLY®
game, as well as a final round of play with the top six competitors. The
Honorable Mayor Don Bankhead came in fifth in the first round of play.
Mr. Gary Heller, VP/Research & Audience
Management at CBS Radio, won the tournament in the Championship round with assets totaling
$12,998.
Mr. Ken Koury placed second, Brian Boles placed third, Peter Schlosser placed
fourth, Craig Way placed fifth, and Robert Ellis, last year’s Champion,
placed sixth. All are experienced national MONOPOLY® players. Also in
attendance was Lee Bayrd, past world champion, Matt McNally, past
national champion, and Kevin Tostado, who is the director of an upcoming
documentary about MONOPOLY® called “Under the Boardwalk.” Look for it in
theatres later this year.
According to Diane Masseth-Jones,
tournament director, “It was fun to see players pitting their real
estate trading skills against other top players while helping out a
worthy cause.” The MONOPOLY® game competition is one of many local
tournaments held nationwide to assist organizations such as the YWCA
North Orange County in raising funds for their causes.
The
MONOPOLY® game, the world’s most popular proprietary board game, is
licensed in more than 80 countries and printed in more than 26
languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, German, Dutch,
Flemish, Swedish, Finnish, Russian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Japanese,
Chinese, Arabic, and Hebrew. Since it first went on the market in 1935,
over 200 million MONOPOLY games have been sold worldwide and are now
played by an estimated 250 million people.
