Music Empowers (Me!) Receives Rotary International Grant
Fullerton, CA- The YWCA of North Orange County received the first international grant in its 87 year history. The $13,500 donation was a matching grant generated from the Rotary Club of Fullerton, the International Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Shingal, South Korea. Shingal is the Sister City of Fullerton and has a long history of interacting with the Rotary Club of Fullerton.
The Music Empowers (Me!) grant will fund a participatory music experience for at-risk, abused, abandoned and/or neglected youth, 6 to 18 years of age. “The grant was used to purchase software, recording and sound equipment that will enable the Music Empowers (Me!) Program to go mobile,” expressed Mike Oats who was the key player in organizing the international grant. “Many youth feel that they are not heard, we are going to change this into, yes we do hear you,” stated Mr. Oats. The Music Empowers (Me!) will be launched through a collaborative effort with the FCLO Music Theatre and Crittenton Services.
We are thrilled that this program will involve at-risk youth to participate in a music experience. They will write the words they feel, create the music genre that captures their mood, and record their song on a CD. Each youth will be given a CD of their music as an example of their uniqueness and to validate their ability to express themselves in a creative positive environment,” said Diane Masseth-Jones, Executive Director, YWCA of North Orange County. She added, “We applaud the international approach taken to support this program as music is truly an international language.”
